It has always been a challenge to instruct young children to learn Galatians 5:22-23. There are so many words to remember.
A Fruit
of the Spirit song always helps, click here – but so will this tasty food craft idea.
Make round tags from plastic milk jugs – large enough to write each fruit of the Spirit on them individually. (Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.) Make sure that you leave enough room for a hole to be punched. (Card stock works well too.)
Cut colorful yarn or ribbon for each child – about 24 inches long. (Long enough to tie and then slip over child's head with ease.)
On the yarn or ribbon strands, string the variety of colors of Fruit Loops – then add a “Fruit of the Spirit” tag, e.g. "Love." Continue adding another set of Fruit Loops – then add the "Joy" tag next. Continue repeating the pattern until all of the names of the "Fruit of the Spirit" are on the strand.
Adjust the “Fruit of the Spirit” strands to fit each child and secure loosely around their neck. (Please remember: The necklace should be able to be removed over the child’s head comfortably.)
Instruct the children to remove ONLY ONE Fruit Loop each time they practice saying the memory verse. They will have all of the scripture tags for the
"Fruit of the Spirit" left on their necklace when the Fruit Loops are gone.
The children will probably want to practice in class a couple of times before taking their "memory verse" home. You can be sure that after they have "tasted God's Word" in this way, they will have also hidden his Word in their heart!
NOTE: If practicing the use of this memory tool in class - you may want to provide the children with some nice cold milk, too! If you do not want them to be distracted by food in the church - secure their necklace in a small
zipper baggie.
