Little White Lies "What is Sin?"

This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3 : 22-24


Preparation:

Print out one each of the curves shown above onto firm cardboard. (The bigger the group of children the bigger the curves so that everyone can see them clearly. They are actually the same size.)

Goal: To teach children that all sin is bad, even those little "white lies." (You may need to explain what "white lies" are: sins that some people think are not that bad.)

Teaching:

Ask, "What color is sin?" (Usually the first answer you get is Black.)

Read Isaiah 1:18 " 'Come now, let us reason together,' says the LORD. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.' "

Show the class the Red curve (SIN).

Ask, “What are some 'bad sins'?” (Clue: Disobeying the 10 Commandments) Wait for answers. 

Now show them the white curve (Little White Lies).

Ask, “What are some 'small sins or white lies'?" 

Place the white curve above the red curve and show that "SIN" is longer (bigger, worse) than "Little White Lies"!

Now put the red curve down and start giving some examples of "Little White Lies." As you mention them, (Ex. Dog ate my homework; Wasn’t me who ate the cookies, etc.) begin pulling the "Little White Lies" curve between both forefingers and thumbs as if to stretch it. After 4 or 5 examples, hold the "Little White Lies" curve against the "SIN" curve, but this time place the red "SIN" curve on top. 

It will appear as if the "Little White Lies" curve has become longer. After a few oohs and ahs, put the one curve behind the other to show that all SIN is the same.

Go on to tell the children that everyone has sinned, but through the blood of Jesus we can be saved if we ask Him to forgive our sins, turn from them, and invite Jesus into our lives. 

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" John 3 : 16.

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die'" John 11 : 25-26.
