Respect & Honor For God

The God of the Old and New Testament is known by many names. These names
help us to understand his nature and reputation. They define him as
Protector, Defender, Friend, Advisor, Judge, and Savior to name just a
few. The Third Commandment says, "Do Not Misuse God’s Name". The goal of
"His Name Shall Be Called...", is to help you teach respect and honor for
God to the children in your ministry.

1) Teacher Acrostic

In regards to the teacher appreciation skit - This is not really a skit
and I don't know if it will help you with a theme, but it was something we
had the kids do for the teachers one year. We had nine kids stand up, each
with a small poster board that had one letter on it. The letters spelled
out T-E-A-C-H-E-R-S-! Each one of the kids read what was on the back of
their poster board:

T is for the time you took to teach God's love for me

E is for encouraging me to be the best that I can be

A is for accepting me as God's child who grows more each day

C is for your caring spirit and loving, compassionate ways

H is for helping me learn that I can share

E is for exalting God and engaging us in prayer

R is for being resourceful and relentless in making learning fun

S is for your selfless serving in a job that's been well done!

We thank you Lord for our teachers and their love that shines all year
through. May these lessons be shared with others so that we may honor and
glorify you! Hope you can use it.

2) Missionary project

> I am seeking to begin a missionary project for my students
>  who are between the ages of 5 and 12.

Cynta,  My Sunday School class of 3rd Graders has always collected for
"Operation Christmas Child" as our mission project and loved it.  It's
where they fill up shoeboxes with small items:  school supplies, slippers,
plush animals, combs, toys, coloring books, etc.  They are then taken to a
site to be shipped out to the main office.  This is run by Franklin Graham
(Billy Graham's son).  You can go into his website and check it over. 
They will send you all kinds of information--videos, DVD, pamphlets,
prayer cards, etc.  They are wonderful to work for.  My class collects
things all year long--but the rest of the classes only collect during a
six week collection period before Christmas.  These shoeboxes go all over
the world to kids in need.
    Our small county also has a "Christmas for the Needy" project where
they collect clothing items from the churches, etc. in the area.  My class
also does the collecting, sorting, etc. for this.  Maybe you can find
opportunities to do things like this.
    Our church has a program where they collect items for a local food
pantry, supplies for the Red Cross, we also collect school items (paper,
notebooks, pens, pencils, backpacks, etc.) every year this time of year to
help out the kids who will be going to school and might not have all the
necessary items that the school requests.
   ( I've been thinking about asking one of the 1st grade school teachers
if we can have a list of the items that the kids need in class--then
having my kids collect as many of the items as they can--to help out the
poorer families.  Up until this year, I've always had grandkids in the
lower grades and always collected "junk" for the teachers--cottage cheese
containers,etc.)
    I've heard about classes that make up door hangers from construction
paper, cardstock, etc. and attach information about your church/Sunday
school programs and invite them to attend.  Attach a pencil with church's
name and address on it if possible, and anything else you can think of.
Wrapped candy is great too!!! Maybe add a tissue paper flower to it. Then
just leave on the doors of the homes in the area.

3) Outreach Service for Kids

Hi TP:
This was started by our wonderful children's director, Kit MacLeod, who is
part of this network. (Kit, can you help out here? ;o) ) Kit coordinates
these events through some of the non-profit agencies in town. In the past
she's been given the name of a family for our children to help directly.
Another wonderful outreach she coordinates is working with the Guardian Ad
Litum program to collect Christmas gifts for underprivileged kids in our
area. Those gifts are brought in on a Sunday morning by the children in
our congregation during our Christmas Cantata and placed under the tree.
Last year some families even donated shiny new bicycles and wheeled them
down the aisle of the church!

4) Missionary Project ages 5-12

You may want to check out the website for Samaritan's Purse    
www.smaritanspurse.org.  They have a wonderful project called Operation
Christmas Child where you can fill shoeboxes to be mailed to
underprivledged children all over the world.   Drop-off points for the
boxes are in various cities in the US.  I did it with my 2nd grade
religious ed class last year and was hoping for 2 boxes and we filled 8
boxes (I had 10 children) plus had 2 other primary classes participate
and we had a total of 30 boxes!

Ten Commandments Lesson Series

The Ten Commandments contain many "Do Nots". They teach us God’s holy
standard and show us how far we fall short of his perfection. But they are
more than this; in these "Do Nots", one can find a positive message: a
message of God’s love.

7) 1st and 2nd Grade?   
 
After years of teaching preschool and kindergarten, I am being promoted to
the 1st and 2nd grade class.  At least 2 of my current students, both very
active boys, will be in my new class.  Most of the other students will be
2nd graders, and I am not sure how to adjust my teaching to work for their
level as well.   Any suggestions would be appreciated!

8) Elders Day and Children's day?

Dear Sarah

Our Church has a special service in October to commemorate Elders Day and
Children's day. The old ladies generally make book marks for the children
in the Sunday School. I would like to have ideas of easy craft items the
children could make for the elderly in the Church.  Please publish this
request in the next newsletter. We will need at least three Sundays to
prepare it.

9) Family Activity: Pumpkin Carving

Each fall our church has a “Pumpkin Carving” at a member’s home “out in
the country”.  Every child brings their own pumpkin and carving tools
(eliminates MANY disagreements), the size varies per child from tiny to
huge.  Some families “gut” their pumpkin at home.  We have a bonfire going
and we provide hotdogs for roasting and drinks.  Everyone brings their own
roasting sticks and a dish to share.  After dinner we all carve our
pumpkins on tables that are set up.  When the pumpkins are finished, it is
dark and we light them all.  The children LOVE this and it is one of our
best attended functions.  We also have a hay ride.  Many members that are
beyond the pumpkin-carving stage come just to enjoy an evening around the
campfire.  Be sure to have trash bags for he pumpkin contents and wet
wipes for the hands.  Lots of fun and fellowship!

10) Ten Commandments Song

We studied the story and the commandments so the kids understood them. 
Then we learned the song.  Since then, when we happen to study another
story that is centered around a commandment, I start the song, and the
kids join right in. 

To the tune of "The Flintstones"

Learn the Ten Commandments
They're the rules God sent from heav'n above.
Learn the Ten Commandments.
They're the rules that are the rules of love.
God's first, don't have idols, do not swear,
Keep the Sabbath, show your folks you care.
Don't kill, commit adultery, steal, lie, or covet

11) Memorizing with Bible Songs

Hi, I have set these scriptures to music that the children in my class are
very familiar with. They were able to memorize these in minutes and are
now teaching them to their families.  I teach 4-12 year old children. We
recorded them singing these along with other songs they have learned. Each
child was given a CD to take home.  I was not sure if you had an area on
your website to place these

12) Getting parents to bring children

Why not include the parents as "Shepereds in the Sunday School"? I am
beginning this year to incorporate this and am surprised with the response
I am receiving! Have the parents become part of the Sunday School
Classroom! They can take attendance, send postcards to children who are
sick or not there, assist in class preparation and so many different
things that will take the pressure off of the teacher/director!
