This powerful Bible story, based on John 13:1-17, teaches children that greatness in God’s kingdom comes through serving others.

You can use this fun Bible alliteration reading as a stand alone lesson or with Lesson 2, "Serving God," from our Prayer of Jesus Bible Lessons.

(When a word that begins with "W" is spoken, children pretend to wash their hands. Emphasize and pause ever so slightly when saying the bolded “W” words.)

(Read)
One evening, before Jesus died on the cross, he was eating a very special dinner with his disciples. During the meal, Jesus stood up, took off his outer robe and wrapped a towel around his waist, then poured water into a basin and began washing their feet.

When it was Peter’s turn he said, “What are you doing, Lord? I’ll never let you wash my feet!’ Peter couldn’t believe that Jesus wanted to wash his feet, because this was something only the lowliest of servants would do. But Jesus said to him, ‘You call me `Teacher' and `Lord,' and you are right, for that is who I am. If you don’t let me wash your feet, then you cannot be my follower. So Peter allowed Jesus to wash his feet. Then Jesus said, ‘Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.’ Jesus washed his disciples’ feet to teach them and us that we are to follow his example by serving one another.”

Discussion
1) Why do you think Peter didn't want Jesus washing his feet?

2) What did Jesus say to Peter when Peter refused to have Jesus wash his feet.

3) Do you think washing people's feet is required to be in his Kingdom?

4) What do you think Jesus truly wants us to understand by this example?

5) What other ways can we serve God and others?
