Eyes to See--Ears to Hear

God Watches Over His Children, He Hears Their Cries

Scriptures
"The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help" Psalm 34:15 (NLT)

"For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23.

"If I say, 'Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,' even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you" Psalm 139:11-12 (NIV).

"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" 1 John 1:5.

Props
An un-baked potato (so it still has the brown skin on it), and an ear of corn.

Have any of you noticed the gardens growing around our area? Do any of you have vegetable gardens at home or your grandparent's or friends' homes? (Ask the children to share about the gardens their family or friends have and what has been grown there.) Some people are growing potatoes like this one. (Show the potato)

We have a lot of fields of corn around us. Some gardens have corn growing right now, too. The plants are SO tall. How many of you have eaten fresh corn this year? (Show the ear of corn) Those really tall plants have delicious corn we can cook and really enjoy eating right off the cob! Guess what? If you are ever near a garden you should be very careful what you say and do! I'm warning you! You really can't do anything or have any secrets if you are in a vegetable garden. Do you know why? (Say with secretive suspense) Because the potatoes have EYES! And the corn has EARS!

Yes, that's a joke. It's called a play on words. See the little dimples on the potato? Those are called "eyes," but the potato can't see you. And this "ear" of corn can't hear you.

I shared the joke because thinking about the eyes and ears in the garden reminded me that no one can hide from God. No matter where we are or what we do, God sees us.

What was the name of the first garden God told us about in the Bible? (Eden)

What happened in the Garden of Eden? (Allow the children to tell the story)

Yes, Adam and Eve didn't obey God; they sinned and God sent them out of the Garden--out of His Presence. They were separated from God. Everyone sins. God wrote that message in many ways in the Bible. It is very clearly written for us in Romans 3:23. "For ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God." God knows we are sinners. God has seen every sin that has ever been committed. Just like Adam and Eve, we too are separated from God. Sometimes we may look around to see if anyone sees us when we do something we shouldn't do or say something we shouldn't say. If we are not in church, or we are with people who do not know about God, Jesus, or the Bible, we might be tempted to sin. If we say unkind things, curse, or lie, God hears us. We cannot hide from God. God see us and hears us.

God's Word says, "If I say, 'Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,' even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you" Psalm 139:11-12.

GOD SEES EVERYTHING. We cannot even hide in the dark. Every Word in the Bible is absolutely true. The Bible says, "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). God is like the most gigantic flashlight you could EVER imagine, so it is ridiculous to ever think we can hide from HIM!

GOD HEARS EVERYTHING
"The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles" Psalm 34:17 (NLT)

Suggested Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for always watching over us. Thank You for Your Word that tells us the Truth, gives us stories to explain Your plan for us, gives us warnings, and gives us hope. Thank You for sending Jesus to earth to shed his blood on the cross for our sins so that we do not have to be separated from You forever. Help us not to sin, no matter where we are! In Jesus' name we pray, AMEN!
