Knock and The Door Will Be Opened

Children's Christian Craft

Children learn to make a door hanger with a little door that really opens to reveal the Bible verse inside. Kids will love knocking on the little door and then opening it to see the verse inside.

Craft Instructions
Use one door hanger for each child (the kind with a hole at the top that you hang on a doorknob, (like a "Do Not Disturb" sign at a hotel). Craft stores stock unfinished wooden ones for about 90 cents each and often put them on sale. Some craft stores also stock foam door hangers, or you could make them from poster board. You can use your search engine to do an internet search for "Kid's Door Hanger" and find several examples that you can use for a pattern.

Find a picture of a door or draw one. Use a copy machine to shrink or enlarge the picture to a size that fits well on the door hanger. This is not hard and you can do this easily. Even if you are NOT an artist, it is not that hard to draw a simple door.

Make sure that the door frame/door jamb is at least 1/4" wide. Once you have your pattern, make as many copies as you need. Cut out the whole picture of the door, including the door frame (door jamb). Let the kids color the door. I prefer the look of colored pencils over crayons. After they have colored the door, use the craft knife to cut along the door line inside the door frame/door jamb on three sides (top, bottom, one side) but do not cut along the "hinge" side of the door. Leave the hinged side attached. You now have a small door that actually opens. Turn it over and reinforce the hinged side on the backside with a piece of clear tape. This will keep it from tearing later.

Type or write the verse (See verse for craft below) on another piece of paper and cut it to a size that fits behind the door. Glue the verse behind the door. Now when you open the door you will see the verse. You may want to open the door and put a small piece of wax paper behind it until the glue dries (in case a little glue gets smeared where it shouldn't be) so that the door doesn't stick to the verse behind it.

Poke a tiny hole onto the side of the door that is not "hinged" and insert a small brass paper brad for a doorknob.

Glue the verse and door onto the door hanger .

Allow kids to use pencils or crayons to decorate the rest of the wooden hanger and write their name at the top.

A Word of Caution: DO NOT use markers on unfinished wooden door hangers. The markers will bleed and smear into the wood

Bible Verse for Craft
"Knock and the door will be opened to you." Matthew 7:7

Lesson
God is our Loving Father. Just as our own parents want to give us only good things, God also wants to give us good things. When we love and obey him, we can ask him for things that are according to his will and he is ready and eager to give them to us.

Read the full context of Matthew 7:7-8: "Ask and it will be given to you' seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him?"

Discuss what it means to ask for things "according to his will" (i.e., not out of greed, that which is pleasing to God, according to his Word, etc.).

Read 1 John 5:14: "If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."
