Tracey, Another church in my area did a 10 Commandments song to the tune
of the "12 Days of Christmas" - the kids helped write it and LOVE singing
it! It follows the format of the 12 Days of Christmas, adding a new line
for each new day, so I'll just do a list of verses - have fun with it!"In
the ____ Commandment, the good Lord said to me,(1st) Have no gods before
me.(2nd) Don't worship idols.(3rd) Don't trash My Name.(4th) Keep My day
holy.(5th) Honor your parents.(6th) You shall not kill.(7th) Don't be
unfaithful.(8th) Don't you be stealing.(9th) Do not tell lies.(10th) Do
not be jealous."

3) Flour ornaments
Here is a recipe for a clay made with flour. Another thing you might
use the flour for is to make cookie mix jars. Just take your favorite
receipe for cookies and layer the ingredients in a canning jar. Start
with flour, then add brown sugar, baking soda, chocolate chips or
oatmel, etc. When done, put the lid on it and add a card with how to
mix, bake and what liquid ingredients need to be added. You can also
use the clay to make a lid for the cookie jar. These make great gifts.
Flour Clay
3 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups of water
Mix all ingredients in a bowl and knead until smooth. The kids love to
do this. You can either add food coloring at this stage or paint the
items with acrylic paint after they are baked. If you think there is a
danger of the any children eating the ornaments, do not seal with
shellac or paint. However, this makes them last longer.
Make shapes with cookie cutters or form shapes. Punch a hole in the top
using a straw. Bake at 300 degrees until they are golden brown. This
takes about 1/2 hour to 1 hour. You can brush with a beaten egg white
when the ornaments are almost done. The more often you paint, the
darker gold they will be. If you used food coloring, do not use the egg
whites, this just makes them ugly.
Jar Lids
Roll out the clay to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut a circle about 1 inch
wider than the lid. Shape the dough over the lid and make a decorative
border with the excess dough just like you would a pie crust. You can
also cut out other designs from the dough, baking them and attaching
them to the lid with glue. Bake the lid with the dough on it for 1/2 to 1
hour. The dough will be a golden brown. You can color or paint the dough
just like above.

4) Voting on Children's Church Issue
Hi, Sarah,
I tried to take the poll on separate church services, but couldn't get the
page to move down to the questions-not sure if it's me or not...would like
to know the results, as we have children's church at our church (children
are in the service from the opening of the service through hymns,
offering, prayer requests, choir anthem, Children's sermon and only go
down from the Scripture reading through the sermon-they come up for the
last hymn. I open with prayer, have Scripture, do an activity to
reinforce the Scripture (have really used your website for that!!!) and
then have clean-up, usually close with prayer also. Some of the people in
the church love it, some don't like the concept because we've never done
it this way before...but it's really good for the kids who haven't been in
church much, and squirm their way through the sermon. Our kids have been
deciding when they are too old for Children's Church, and have started
sitting upstairs after deciding they are too old. This technique is
supposed to be better than having the children in a separate service, as
the kids are exposed to the "big people's" worship, but have a sermon on
their level.

Maureen: The Lenten Services with the characters were "By My Hand? For
My Sake" written by Nothwehr and Mead. Our Pastor said that some of them
were rewritten a bit to fit our church needs as they were originally quite
conservative but it gave us a great place to start and build on.
The wonderful drama we did this year with the liturgical dance of the
crucifixion is something I will have to find out about for you. If you

6) Promotion Sunday

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but we have our version
of promotion Sunday the final day of Sunday School before the summer break
with certificates and special snacks. What we also did this day for a few
years was have a Bible scavenger hunt. The older children were given a
list of verses to look up and discover the object they were supposed to
find. They paired up with the younger children into small groups and the
hunt was on. Everyone was a winner and was given a small prize. The
children really seemed to enjoy it and it made the day different and
special.

7) Joshua Lessons
Hi! The Lord's blessings on you and yours!
I had fun last week with my bible in schools class, reading them the story
of Joshua .Here is the lesson plan: Choose a large children's story book
about Joshua and read the story in as an exciting way as possible. I had
a
little boy hold up the book and help me turn the pages. He was really
proud of doing this! Afterwards, let the children build a "city" of blocks on a
large sheet of plastic. The children can then dress up as Israelites and
role play the great march around the walls of Jericho. Have some children
pretend to play on"horns" as they march and let the others sing their
favourite choruses as they go along. Choose a child to act as a checker
for
the number of times the marchers go around the wall by holding up large
numeral cards, and dropping them down 7,6, etc . When it gets to the end,
have some body shake the plastic sheet so that Jericho's walls all fall
down! The children can be prepped to shout "The Lord prevails! He always
answers prayers!" or some such thing! Great fun with a small group. For a
large on , you could divide them into groups for the same activity.

8) Teaching the Trinity
We recently did a study on comparing Baptist to Mormons
In that material was a great display of the trinity I will try to type it

9) Flour dough
This is the best playdough I have ever used. It keeps well without
refrideration and is non toxic. Give it to children as gifts in a ziplock
with a cookie cutter or two.
Sift together - 3 cups flour, 1 1/2 cups salt, 6 tsps cream of tartar
Bring to a boil - 3 cups water, 3 Tablspoons of cooking oil, and food
coloring (paste food color gives the most vibrant colors) a package of
unsweetened soft drink powder for pale
pastel color or scent for food coloring- though this is optional.
Pour the boiling liquid into the dry ingredients. Stir. When cool enough
knead until smooth and pliable.
Salt Dough for Keeps
Boil 1 cup water. Stir in 1 cup salt until it dissolves. Then add 1/2
cup white glue until it dissolves, and 1 tsp lemon juice. Pour into 3
cups flour. Stir well and knead until smooth. If too dry add a few drops
of water at a time. If too wet add a teaspoon or so of flour at a time.
The humidity in the air definitely effects the amount of flour needed

11) Promotion Sunday: Rite of Passage
For the past two years, we have done a Rite of Passage for our 6th graders
when they leave the CM program. We begin by giving each of them a seed,
and then they plant it in a large plastic flower pot. We then water it and
talk about how they were once those seeds, they were tended to by loving
and caring parents, that their Christian education was nourished by the
church and their teachers. We then read the parable of the sower. The
youth minister talked about "Farmer God" and how he tends what has been
planted. They are then given a tomato plant (put in a paper bag) to take
home and tend. We talk about the fruit the plant will put out and how
when they use their spiritual gifts will see the fruits. Sabrina -

12) Why have Children's Church
I was reading the responses of many folks about "Why have children's
church?" and I would like to respond to a few of the comments made:
<We have had several children get saved....while in a church....if they had been elsewhere,this would not have taken place.>
I too have seen children go to the alter and pray for salvation, however,
it is not a regular sight. In our children's church we see children pray
for salvation almost every service. Many of the children bring friends
from school or the neighborhood because they are excited about what God is
doing in church. We have had kids pray for each other for healing and seen
the healing take place. Every worship service as I stand with the children
and watch them singing, eyes closed hands lifted in surrender to God, I
feel like weeping with joy, this is what it's about!!! Kids entering in to
God's presence freely and enjoying relationship with Him!!
<If childrens church is just away to get the children out of listening to
the preacher,or taking them out so they don't disturb the preacher while
he is on the floor,it sounds like a babysitting service.>
There will always be parents who veiw the ministry to children as an
opportunity to "get rid of the kids for a while" so they can "worship in
peace." Many times (not always) this just means they don't want to have to
deal with kids that THEY have trained, by their lack of discipline, to
misbehave. This is a sad but unavoidable fact of fallen man. When you have
parents with this attitude I ask, just how much nurture and admonition of
the Lord are these kids going to recieve? Usually (not always) a parent
with this attitude, their main goal is for their child to keep quiet and
leave them alone. So the child sets up their own little playground right
there on the floor and plays until church is over!!! I don't think this
child is soaking up much!!! So even though for some parents, a children's
church may just be babysitting, for the kids, at least they get to hear
the Gospel and have a chance to fall in love with Jesus instead of wasting
many years on the floor of the big church hearing nothing.

In all actuallity, a child may sit quietly for years in a grown up church
service and have no respect for the pastor!! His parents may teach him to
sit still and be quiet or else and then go home and bad mouth the pastor
the rest of the week!!! Respect for the pastor and the house of God comes
as parents daily teach it to their children.

This is an interesting idea however, I believe that unless you live in a
community that is set up much like life was back in the 1700's, or you
homeschool your children, kids nowadays live in a totally different
universe than their parents!! They are in a school system that is
completely hostile to anything and everything good in this world and they
are faced daily with the pressure of teachers and peers to conform. They
need sermons etc. that deal with issues that they face and maybe their
parents don't know how to help them. And the issues adults need to hear
about sometimes from the pulpit are not always the best for children to be
hearing.
Finally, I do beleive that children should spend some time learing how to
sit with their parents and participate as much as possible in the adult
worship. Our children's ministry is set up so that the children are in two
out of the three weekly services we have. The 5 to 7 year olds go to
children's service on Sunday morning, the 8 to 12 year olds on Sunday
evening and there is no children's church on Wednesdays. Our 3 and 4 year
old class is set up that half of the 3 & 4's come Sunday morning, and the
other half at night, again no Wednesdays. This way the children receive a
mixture of ministry at their level as well as learing to appreciate and
behave in an adult service.
