1) Children's Church

I love reading all the ideas on your newsletter!  Our church has decided
to change the way our children's church works.  We are going to actually
have church in our old church next door for the kids.  The youth will be
taking turns playing instruments for praise and worship for the children
and they will also have puppet shows as visuals to teach the Word to the
children.  I am so excited about starting this.  I think the kids will
love it!

2) Creation Craft

We are currently doing a Creation Rotation. In our Art workshop we have
given the kids black Scratch Boards with rainbow colors underneath. (God
started with a void - so do they)  After hearing the story of creation
they chose one of the days to depict on their scratch boards. This has
been a HUGE hit!

Have fun,
Linda in Edmonds

3) Memory verses in Sunday School

one game the younger children enjoy: after the verse has been read,
discussed and recited, they stand in a circle, and use any item at all
to be the "hot potato" and pass it while the music plays; when the music
stops, whoever is holding the "hot potato" must attempt to recite the
verse from memory. Similarly, a little bag with handles and small candy
treats, such as Skittles or M&M's, can be passed. When the music stops,
the child holding the bag must recite the verse, and if done accurately,
they reach in, take a treat, and the music resumes. A cassette of
children's music is used and the teacher or assistant operates the
recorder.

--from SSTN: love the candy bag idea!

4) Harsh Discipline?

Hi,
My name is Jackie and I'm new to the SSTN.  I've only been in ministry a
couple of years so would appreciate any feed back.  I direct our
children's church (k-4) but our 5th and 6th graders have a separate
gathering of their own on Sunday mornings that is overseen by our
Children's Director.  The teacher in the 5th and 6th grade class uses a
racquet ball to keep control of his class.  If a child is talking while he
is talking he simply throws the racquet ball at them hitting them in the
head, back or shoulder.  This is really troubling to me and in my heart I
feel like it is wrong and shaming.  I have communicated my concerns
to our Children's Director but nothing has changed.  It seems to me that
if you hit a child in the head to keep them in line that they are going to
be shamed and not want to come back.  Doesn't the bible say that we
shouldn't hinder a child from coming to Christ?  Is it even legal for him
to be doing this?  How should I handle this?

Thank you in advance for any reply you can give me.
Jackie, CA

--from SSTN: Because of the serious nature of this posting I responded
personally to Jackie as soon as it came in. This situation is obscene, not
to mention illegal. This teacher is running the risk of seriously hurting
a child or having the church sued. If the director doesn't move to change
the situation you need to inform the pastor immediately (you should
probably discuss this with him/her anyway).

5) Spare Rod, spoil child

I agree that isn't what the scripture says. I believe
that is an old wise tale. The scripture actually
states: Proverbs 13:24 He who spares his rod hates his
son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

In Him,
Kristin

6) Jesus' Life VBS?

Here are some ideas of how our Vacation Bible School will go:

Monday night--Birth of Christ
Tuesday night--Childhood
Wednesday night--John's Baptism of Jesus
Thursday night--Crucifixion
Friday night--Easter

I can pretty much find the ideas for Christmas and for Easter, but I do
not have any ideas on his childhood and John's Baptism of Jesus.

Can you or any of the other Sunday School teachers help me out. I think
that our vacation bible school will be the second week in July which
doesn't give me too much time to find the crafts to go along with the
lessons.

E-mail me as soon as possible so I can get started on my crafts.

7) Part of God's Church?

My husband and I started teaching our Preschool/Kindergarten Sunday
School. Our next unit is I am part of my Church.  I was trying to find a
craft we could make that would go with this unit. Thanks for the help.

8) Toothpick Cross

Hello!
I was wondering if you could help me out - We are preparing for a mission
trip to an orphanage in Mexico and I have misplaced the instructions for
making a toothpick cross (it is about 8 inches high and has toothpicks
glued onto cardboard in a sort of diagonal pattern radiating from the
middle). I searched your website and did not see it, but I may not have
been looking in the right place. Perhaps you know what I am talking about
and it is not on your website. I certainly appreciate your time in helping
us out!!
Thank you, Jan Beaman

9) Bible Memorization Techniques

One way that my kids love to memorize verses at least through about
grade 4  (some older) is you give them a way to talk and something to do
Examples

Whisper it  while walking on tiptoes
Shout it out while marching
Talk like a robot while imitating an airplane
Talk like a fish (fish lips) while walking like a penguin

And anything else you can think of they really like the shouting
and whispering
