Fourth of July Activity
With the "USA Patriotic Catcher" kids will learn the answers to eight
basic USA citizenship questions such as, "Why did the Pilgrims come to
America?"; What is the US Constitution?, and "What does the First
Amendment guarantee?". A great activity for July 4th!

1) Fiery Furnace
I have just done this with our sunday school, I found a picture of
shadrack, meshach adednego in the furnace with the angel and photocopied
onto card then turned it into a jigsaw, bit fiddly but the kids seemed to
enjoy me telling the story while they each had a turn at putting up
a piece (because we are a small church with little finances we have to
put our own resources together) www.Shiningstar.com are really good
they have puzzles, word finds and colouring in pictures which I sometimes
adapt to suit.

2) Games For Autistic Children?
I was wondering if you have any ideas for kids with Autisim. I help run a
program at my church in FT Lauderdale Fla and am looking for all the help
we can get.

3) Fiery Furnace

As with any lesson - use the 5 senses.
I used blacklight to teach this lesson. Use a box for the furnace - size
is your choice - you can make it to sit on a table or life size (kid
size). Cut a large hole in the front of the box. You can paint the box,
dip sponges in paint and push them against the box for a brick effect, or
cover it with brick corrugated paper). I lined the box with black paper.
Cut out 3 black silhouettes and stick inside box. Using blacklight crayons
draw a 4th man on the back wall of the box. These crayons only show when
the blacklight is on. Add lots of flames (fluorescent poster board) inside
of box.
Tell the story, turn on the blacklight when you talk about the 4th man in
the fire. It is soooo awesome when you see the 4th guy appear. You can
sit a heater beside the box to help the kids understand the heat.
For a snack - (bring a toaster oven or use your church oven) spread
marshmallow creme on a graham cracker. Lay 3 teddy graham bears on the
creme. Place in oven until creme browns. The bears will not brown, just as
the 3 Hebrew boys did not burn!
Buy these crayons from a theatrical supply or do an online search.

4) Keeping Children's Interest

Eerdin: I have taught several middle school aged Sunday School classes,
and have found that the best way to get them to study on days other than
Sunday right before class, is to offer them incentives. Incent, incent,
incent! It's all about rewards for kids this age. They are old enough to
read on their own, so why not assign them a Bible person to look up and
then tell about that person during another class. Give them "classic"
people to look up, like Adam and Eve, Jonah, Joshua, and others that would
be familiar to them. Or, you could give them a question and answer sheet
pertaining to the particular person or event (falling of Jericho, for
example) and have them fill it out during the week and bring it back on
the next Sunday. Consider setting it up as a devotion, with a few
questions for each day of the week so they aren't overwhelmed or feel like
they are doing homework.
Not everything is worth an actual treat - sometimes just giving them
some recognition in front of the class, telling their parents about their
accomplishments while they are standing nearby, or putting their name on a
poster is enough. But I always like to throw in a piece of candy or a
small token gift purchased at a dollar store. I polled my class at the
beginning to find out what kinds of things they liked to eat - favorite
candy and such, and what they would like to get as a prize if they did
something really special. In our junior church, sometimes we toss a piece
of candy from a big bowl at a kid that answers a question during the
review of the lesson. That keeps them on their toes. Good luck!

5) Teaching Boys
Have you talked with him yet? Start by speaking clearly and using the
correct terms (not spelling out words) - so that their is no
miscommunications. Allow him to ask you questions and answer him honestly.
Find out who his friends are and speak with their parents. Let your son
know that the behavior is not acceptable. YOU must be the one to talk to
him.
The reality of the situation is this: Business wire magazine reported that
children spend sixty-five percent more time on pornography sites than they
do on game sites. 'The Peril of Pornography" by Kerby Anderson and Perry
Brown states that 'adult bookstores now outnumber McDonald's in America by
a
ratio of 3:1. Kaiser Family Foundation states that Fourteen percent
(almost
1 in 7) of all 13 year olds have had sex.

6) Corn-flour slime recipe
Hi this is in response to the corn-flour slime recipie - water and
cornflour. This slime is alot of fun because when you make it to the
right consistency you can hit the slime and it goes "hard" but when
you run your hand through it slowly it is really thick and slimey.
If you make the cornflour slime and then bring it to the boil on the
stove you will end up with a gravy like slime.
For those concerned about food colouring staining clothes add a little
bit of liquid washing up soap (the kind you use to wash dishes by
hand).

9) Construction VBS
We did the Construction VBS a few summers ago. It was a lot of fun. We
sang songs like "The Wiseman and Foolish Man" based on Matthew 7:24-27.
For our fieldtrip, we toured HomeDepot and then did one of their building
projects. The kids loved it!
