1) Family-style VBS program
We tried a family-style VBS program at our church last year. While the
idea was great, for various reasons - including multicultural, it was a
"new" idea, etc., etc., there was only a minimal turnout. The program was
excellent: to include the entire family, we scheduled it for 6pm-8:45 pm
in the evenings for one week M-F. The attendees would receive a real meal
built around a theme (no chintzy stuff), which would be from 6:00 - 7pm;
there would be praise songs from about 7:10-7:30 that would also involve
families, youth and adults - similar to what you might hear at a Christian
camp. Then at 7:30 the group would go to smaller groups of women only, men
only, middle school, and children. The senior youth could choose to do
clean up or sit in on the adult Bible study. The women's group used a
publication about women in the Bible and how their examples benefit women
similarly today. The men's discussion focused on David's life and the
eleme nts from his life that affect men today (slaying giants, fatal
attractions, etc.). The young children had veggie tales and related
activities and discussion; the middle schoolers had a jungle survival
theme going. At the end of the week - Friday - there was show and tell as
a communal activity - sharing the week's experience. And it was FREE!
Perhaps this might work for other congregations, which is why I'm sharing
it with you. The concept behind this effort was to have entire families
worshipping together as opposed to a babysitting/daycare atmosphere that
some VBS programs engender. jo in MD

2) Disruptive Child
Re. SSTN # 29 - April 5, 2004 - 7
There are a number of things that this child may be dealing with, but
judging from your statement that "his parents are well aware of the
problem
and don't see anything wrong with the way he acts! They see it as a
normal
child just acting out for attention." I would venture a guess that the
majority of his problem lies in the seemingly permissive way in which he
has
been "trained" by his parents!
If they see nothing wrong with his disruptive behavior at school then he
surely must be a terror at home. My guess would be that his parents allow
him to do and have anything he wants with the least effort provocation on
his part and he has, tragically, been trainied to act this way in order to
feed his own desires. My bet is that if his parents were to attend a
Christian parenting class (quickly for the sake of this boy) their eyes
might be opened to the very real needs this boy has for structure and
discipline.
My sister is pitifully the same with her son, will not listen to anyone
and
her son is about the same as you describe; highly intelligent, actively
disruptive, disobedient to the extreme and painfully sad. Hw wants his
mother to take control of him but she just refuses to do it. One thing we
have noted however is that he will frequently calm down if fed a snack or
sandwich. His sleep and feeding structures are non-existent. His mom
drags
him everywhere with her and he does not have a consistent pattern of
sleeping and eating.

5) Unruly Child?
I was wondering if anyone had some ideas to help me with a very disruptive
and unruly kindergartner. I have used up everything in my own bag of
tricks and am at a loss to know what to do next. The child has a special
set of circumstances that I have not come into contact with before. He has
been adopted from a Russian orphanage by a family in our church. I don't
know of any specific special needs this child has, but just from my
experience with him, I know that he doesn't respond to the average
techniques to get a child's attention, or to get them to settle down for a
story or craft or game long enough to participate. I hate to contact his
parents during the church service to remove him and have not used this
option yet. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank You and God bless

6) Tests in Sunday School
I have taught children in various ages and situations (Bible Clubs, Jr.
Church,
Sunday School). We don't have "tests" in Sunday School. I have Review
Games -
that way, the teacher is receiving feed-back on how or what was taught.
If the kids simply didn't "get it" then the teacher knows possibly why,
or should examine her previous unit's lessons.
The games are fun and everyone is a winner because
the children who don't know the answer, hear it from the one who does; or
the teacher must explain it to everyone. Sometimes I give out little
prizes, or pieces of candy - mostly the kids enjoy getting the outrageous
points, to
see who has the most. (I find giving 1,000 points instead of 1 excites the
kids) I do not allow name calling, etc. And the "second winners" (losers)
get a prize also. Hope this helps.

7) Teaching children to Pray?
Looking for any ideas that your may have on teaching children to Pray. (
3 Year Olds.)
I did try to get into Goggle.com last night to begin for the lesson for
next week and could not get in and then I find your welcome email and your
Blessing of The Joy Of Easter.

8) Promotion Day?
In our SS we have a yearly Promotion Day. All of the children's classes
move to the same grade they are in the school system, the adults, seniors
and all lower classes have goals that should be met before advancing to
the next grade. Do you have any suggestions for a promotion service,
similar to a graduation although we know we never graduate from Bible

9) 40 days of Purpose?
God Bless you ALL! This message is in for All who have done or are doing
- the 40 days of Purpose. Our church is preparing for the kick off of the
40 days of Purpose - we are working to prepare the sunday school material
for the kids. Would appreciate some guideance and or feed back on stuff
that may work - our group starts with Kindergarten through young Teen.
