I need ideas for VBS starting this June.

I would highly recommend this idea. We believe that the ultimate goal in
teaching children the Bible is to make everything you do "God-centered".
Pastor Piper at Bethlehem Baptist enforces this principlle to give God
glory. Our lives should be Christ-saturated and by our example our
children should be Christ-saturated. May it be our goal in whatever we
teach and do with children answer the question about something WHO God
is. We use a simple object to teach this important truth to children. A
SUN and its RAYS! “THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD.” Psalms 19:1

We get just a glimpse of the glory of God when we behold the brilliance and beauty of the sun. Let these rays rouse you to recognize and record the incomparable character
of God as you study the Scriptures (enlarge or photo copy a sun that has straight rays and after reading a Bible story or Scripture have your children in class discuss what it
taught them about God. His power, His loyalty, His mercy etc.etc. Have
them write each trait on a RAY of their sun. These are their "Praise Rays"!

We get just a glimpse of God’s glory when we behold the brilliance and beauty
of the sun. Let these rays introduce you to only the beginning of Who He is.
ENJOY and PASS this idea on that others may see the BEAUTY of GOD!

(From ChristianCrafters.Com: As many of you know, AbbaGail is a regular teenage contributor to the network. She actually apologized to me for not sending in anything to the newsletter this week. I know I speak for many of us when I say, "Thank you AbbaGail for your commitment to Jesus and to all of us in the SST-Network who benefit from your God-given insight!!)

why does it seem easier to do bad things rather than good. Can you suggest a way to >answer this that would be accepted by the teenagers.

What great questions your teens are asking! I have asked this question to my class: "Are we sinners because we sin?" Or, "Do we sin, because we are sinners?"
(Allow them to discuss the point.)

When my children were babies, I never needed to teach them to be greedy. It was 'naturally occurring'! However, it was necessary for me to teach them to share. (They still struggle with this!) We sin because we are sinners. The Bible tells us that we are born into sin. We are by nature children of wrath, Adams sons and daughters. (See Ephesians 2:3 and Romans 5:12-17). Paul writes about this struggle too, choosing the bad rather than the good! (See Romans 7:15 -Romans 8:2.) I find his words very encouraging! :o)

Even though we are forgiven because of Christ's death on the cross, we continue to sin because we are sinners. But the good news is that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ! (See Romans 10:9-10, 13 and Romans 8:9--this is how we get the power to choose the right way!) I hope this helps.

God bless your ministry,

THE SURVIVAL KIT

BAND-AID
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as
have a contrite spirit. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a
broken and a contrite heart---these, O God, You will not despise. He
heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalms 34:18; 51:17; 147:3

BUBBLE-GUM
When you are hurting, start CHEWing and CHEWing over and over; that is,
meditating over and over on the Word of God and His promises and
precepts.
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth…I meditate on
Your precepts and consider your ways…I remember the days of old; I
meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands…whatever
things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just,
whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are
of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything
praiseworthy---meditate on these things.”
Colossians 3:2; Psalms 119:15; 143:5; Philippians 4:8

YARN or STRING
When you are lonely, afraid, anxious or sad, remember to TIE God’s Word
around your heart and neck so that….
“When you go it will lead you [direction]; when you sleep God’s Word will
keep you [protection]; and when you awake God’s Word will talk with you
[meditation, again!]”
Proverbs 6:20-22

PENCIL
Make a list of your blessings found in Jesus Christ and count them one by
one!
“In everything give thanks, for this is God’s will concerning you…”
1 Thessalonians 5:18

LIFESAVERS
JESUS SAVES! If He did the ultimate, can He not do the lesser!!
…”Christ Jesus came into the world to SAVE sinners…” If God be for us,
who can be against us??
I Timothy 1:15; Romans 5:6-11; 8:31-39

ERASER
Those who have been forgiven much should forgive much, erasing the
offenses of others even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32
“And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a
day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.” Luke
17:4

TEA BAG
Even in the hot waters of affliction the Christian can rest and relax
beside still waters realizing God is stirring up his remembrance of Him
and brewing benefit and blessing for the soul. “Though the Lord gives
you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers
will not be moved into a corner anymore, but your eyes shall see your
teachers and your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the
way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you
turn to the left…fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by
your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be
with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you
walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame
scorch you. For I am the Lord your God.. ” Isaiah 30:20-21; 43:1-3

MINT
As you savor the sweetness of your own so great salvation, consider the
fragrance you are to be to those around you, that is, the fragrance, the
sweet-smelling savor of Christ to the saved, to the unsaved, and to God
Himself. 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

TOOTHPICKS
Learning to pick and choose righteousness from evil is called
discernment. Wholeheartedly embrace what is good and shun what is evil,
measuring everything according to the Word of God. “Test all things;
hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
I Thessalonians 5:21-22; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

RUBBER BAND
Consider how Jesus humbly stretched Himself out on the cross in sacrifice
for you and determine whether it is too much for you also to be crucified
with Christ, stretched to all limits, dying to self that you might live
unto Him Who died and rose again for you. 2 Corinthians 5:15;
Philippians 2:3-8

BOTTLE OF PURELL
Consider the constant danger of contamination from the world, the flesh,
and the devil. “…let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the
flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God….draw near to
God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and
purify your hearts, you double-minded….guard your heart with all
diligence for out of it spring all the issues of life.” 2 Corinthians
7:1; James 4:8; Proverbs 4:23

Hope you like that. We made this up when someone asked us to help them
put verses with the objects in their survival kit. You may have heard of
different versions :0)
