2) About using bribery

To Judi, who worries about using bribery: I think you have a valid
concern, but I see a fine line between bribery and positive reinforcement.
We, too, had a difficult class of middle schoolers. In our efforts to
control the problem kids and try to find a way to reach
them, we discovered that our well behaved, or just plain quiet kids, got
lost in the shuffle. I think making an effort to recognize the kids who
are doing well and behaving is important - and if that means a sticker or
a small treat, that's okay. Just so long as common sense and restraint
are practiced! Every now and then, our Sunday School principal puts a
little something - book mark, prayer card - in our attendance folder.
It's not bribery, just positive reinforcement, and we like it!

3) Ideas for 2&3 year olds:

I teach a class of 2 & 3 year olds twice a week. Some things that we do
are: No matter what the craft or theme, the kids always love to use the
glue sticks and love to glitter, and both are inexpensive. I took two of
the plastic salt/pepper shakers (with lids) and put glitter in them, the
shakers let out just enough glitter to decorate the pictures, or whatever,
without letting it spill everywhere. The kids love to shake out the
glitter. Each month we do a theme for our Wednesday class. This month our
theme is "God Created Everything". Each week we learn about what God
created (using Genesis) and we make a craft to go along with it. For kids
this age, the stories have to be short and geared for that age group. They
love Story Songs, especially if you act it out or use puppets, and they do
pick up more than you think they do. I have found that for the crafts,
anything they can use their hands for works best. They love to get messy!
We do a lot of finger painting, on different things-maybe a picture, maybe
a box, for Valentines they did candle holders for their moms. I usually
put paint in bowls and put smocks on them and let them have it. Even if
they dip the whole project into the paint bowl, it is fine. I also use
"soapy water paints" a lot. I mix paint and water and bubble bath, which
makes a colored foam. They like to scoop the foam on things, and it dries
leaving a neat design. Always use waterbased, washable paints, because
sometimes they do paint themselves! Though the kids are young, we still do
a lot of different things. We even have a popcorn game. The kids sit in a
circle, we sing a little song, and they "pop" for Jesus. They don't always
"pop" at the right time, but they have fun. Besides they are learning.
Feel free to contact me if you would like more ideas or to know more about
the ones I've mentioned. Leslie@assetmanagementgroup.com
God Bless. Leslie G.-Arkansas

--from SSTN: This age group can be difficult to find new ideas that are
easy to implement. So...anytime ANYONE wants to share a craft with
ChristianCrafters.com, that you've developed...please do! You can submit
directions with a picture for the world to see! ;o) Blessings, Sarah
Keith.

4) Repetition for Little Ones

I definitely agree with the teacher who mentioned how once is not enough
for K-2 classes. In fact, I am constantly challenged by how many ways I
can vary the activities to make the lessons sink in. We've had a number
of lessons recently on prayer in our class...and have used the hand method
(with each finger representing a prayer object/subject) and ACTS and even
making clay pretzels (to signify the early Christian reminders) And it's
very fulfilling when the kids remind me about one or another of the
earlier activities in relation to the current week.

They are like little sponges...they soak up quite a lot, but need to be
squeezed once in a while, too so you can see how much progress you've
made.
Keep up the good work...He will bless you!

5) Scavenger Hunt For The Homeless

The kids go on a scavenger hunt to collect things needed by the homeless,
such as food, coats, grooming items, sleeping bags, blankets etal. Then we
had them sleep over in the church using the items before taking them to a
shelter. Peace, Joy and Laughter

6) Crafts for 2 and 3 years old

> I would really appreciate some input on games/activities/crafts for 2 and
> 3 year olds.

Hello, One project that we just finished was our bulletin board I took
small pictures of the days of creation and put the Bible verse for each
day they colored the pictures and we put their names on the pictures for
them . At the top of the board we put creation and then we let them with
our help hang the pictures. They were very excited to show off the board
and their pictures when their parents came to pick them up.

Another idea we did for the 10 commandments is a little Lady Bug. I cut
out circles the size of a 8 inch plate(Body) (red construction paper) and
circles the size of a saucer (head) (white construction paper). Then on
the
computer I made small circles and put one of the commandments in each one
for the spots of the Lady Bug. The Lady Bug was red and white instead of
black and red but they still liked it.

Also you could make Dinosaurs and for the triangles down the back make
each one a commandment! I cut everything ahead of time and let them glue
and color them. I hope these work for you. God Bless! Can you believe our
wonderful savior has given us such a fun and rewarding position as
teaching children!

--from SSTN: if you've designed a neat bulletin board idea...submit it to
ChristianCrafters.Com and I'll create a new section on Bulletin board
ideas. Got to have the pictures! Thanks, Sarah Keith <><

7) Easter ideas for 3-4 yr. olds

Mom teaches 3 and 4 year olds in a small country Church in New England.
She is interested in new ideas for presenting 1] the gospel and 2] Holiday
themes for instance right now with Easter coming up how do you encourage
true holiday spirit without killing the rabbit?

PS- I have sent her the scavenger hunt that I sent you as well as the
Resurrection eggs......Oooo I just had another thought. They have a church
kitchen that they could use! They may be able to do the Resurrection
Cookies too!

--from SSTN: there are a lot of Easter ideas in the Archives List from
last year. Including Resurrection Easter eggs, Easter Story cookies,
Easter Jellybeans, etc. Think of the Archives List as the GOLDMINE!

8) Balloon helicopters

I would like to know where to get those helicopters too! I have a 2nd and
3rd grade class of ALL boys -- they would love those! Kathleen from
DeWitt (ctown41446@aol.com) I like the name of your town too! How
about the Bible verse Isaiah 40:31 "they who hope in the Lord will renew
their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles..." --using the
helicopters as an added stress on God's strength allowing us to do all
things.

--from SSTN: the address is in the previous SSTN #165--

10) Lesson of the Fig Tree?

In a few weeks we will be doing the lesson of the Fig Tree. I am blank as
to clever ideas to do with the children as far as crafts. I love this
newsletter. You have so many creative people. Please help me think of
fun things my 3rd graders could do.

11) Apostles/Disciples Songs

Thank you to EVERYONE that sent the Apostle/Disciple songs in! I had never
heard any of these! To avoid having the next two SSTN's with duplicate
postings, I'll post them once here. Thank you again to EVERYONE that
posted!!

Sing to the tune of "Jesus Loves Me":

Jesus called them one by one
Peter, Andrew, James and John
Next came Philip, Thomas, too
Matthew and Bartholomew.

Chorus:
Yes, Jesus called them
Yes, Jesus called them
Yes, Jesus called them
And they all followed him.

James, the one they called the less,
Simon, also Thaddeus.
Twelve apostles, Judas made.
Jesus was by him betrayed.

Repeat Chorus.

______________________

I learned a disciple song as a child and I still remember it. It is sung
to the tune of "Bringing in the Sheaves."

There were 12 disciples / Jesus called to help him / Simon Peter, Andrew /
James, his brother John / Philip, Thomas, Matthew / James the son of
Alphaeus / Thaddeus, Simon, Judas / and Bartholomew.

He has called us too / He has called us too / We are His disciples / I am
one, are you? / He has called us too / He has called us too / We are His
disciples / We His work must do.

another subscriber wrote: "My mother printed the names on poster board and
held it up while they sang along."

12) Disciples Song

> Does anyone know of a song that teaches the 12 disciples to children.

I have found some great children's songs for memory work on a tape called
"Musical Memory Builders" by Jolinda Crumm. I ordered mine from the
Florida College Bookstore (www.flcoll.edu - link to bookstore). There is
a song on there for the 12 disciples, 12 sons of Jacob, etc. I actually
learned these songs when I was a kid and am now using them to teach my
sunday school kids. I can sing my 10 plagues, etc. to this day.
