Teaching 4 & 5 Year Olds?

What (or how) is the best way to teach 4 and 5 year olds bible stories?

Kind regards,
Venilla Pillay

--from SSTN: Jesus taught using parables, simple stories about everyday events, and then compared them to God's kingdom. By using this technique with children, and actively including their senses, you will find the children to be more interested in what is taught and they are more likely to remember it! This is the underlying principle of, that is teaching children by using hands-on Bible lessons that include crafts, games, food devotions, and skits. Our curriculum is for K-5th grade, with the optimal target of 3-5th grade. However, many of the ideas can be modified for younger children. You can learn more at:

The Gift of Faith Object Lesson

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8

(You will need a white t-shirt; a washable marker; and a wrapped present containing a large, plain colored, long-sleeved button down shirt. Have a volunteer put on the white t-shirt.)

Say: The Bible says that Jesus saved us. But what are we saved from? (God’s punishment for sinning against him. Sinning is doing wrong, disobeying God’s commands.)

Ask children to name sins. (As children name sinful things, write them on the t-shirt using the washable marker.)

Say the Bible verse and emphasize the following, “…and this not of yourselves it is a gift of God.”

(Have the volunteer open the gift box and put on the long-sleeved shirt over the t-shirt.)

As volunteer buttons it up, say, “When we receive the Gift of Faith, we put on Jesus, sort of like putting on a clean piece of clothing! God no longer sees our sin, but he sees Jesus' goodness! (See Galatians 3:27)

From the book, "Spirit Gifts, An Introduction For Children On Spiritual Gifts."
