Teaching Techniques

For the next several weeks I want to focus on teaching-techniques that capture children's attention in the classroom.

The first method involves Bible memorization, which I've named, SOUND-OFF. Teacher begins by saying part of the Bible verse in a loud voice. Children then repeat it. Teacher says the next part a little softer, and children repeat that. The teacher says the next part even softer, with children repeating that. Finally the teacher "mouths" the last part of the verse, "sound off," and children imitate it. Repeat the verse a few more times using varying levels of sound to engage the children. You can also change the pitch of your voice--deep, high, squeaky, etc.--while varying the sound.

In my book, Bible Games Explosion I have included even more memorization ideas to engage the children in your ministry!

Last Wednesday, while teaching the Ten Commandments "Look n' Learn" method, I used a similar idea of "not talking" to engage the children. First, I had them imitate the hand motions several times before speaking the commandments. Once they had the hand-motions memorized, I added the spoken word to the commandment. It was very effective. By the end of class everyone one of those 3rd and 4th grade children had memorized--in order--the Ten Commandments!

If you use either of these methods, I'd love to hear from you!
